SthlmStartupHack - No hack is better than the hackers! Stockholm Startup Hack is a day for developers, designers and innovators living in Stockholm to meet and build things together.
The aim is to put Stockholm on the map as one of the best startup cities in Europe, as well as grow and strengthen our community.

Participants will get 12 hours to create something, you can choose to work on your own or in a team (max three people). About 30 teams competed for glory and a prize provided by Spotify.

Total list of sponsors: Wrapp, Tripbirds, Mynewsdesk, Ted Valentin, FundedByMe, Teamtailor, Tictail, iZettle, Scrive, Spotify, SilarApp, Spotify and Startuplocation.
Food, drinks, and lots of love – all included. Great arrangement by Jocke Ekberg from WrappMartina Elm from Tripbirds and Jonny Strömberg from Mynewsdesk.

SOINK got the opportunity to interview Jan Järfalk from the winning team:

SOINK: “Tell us about yourself and your background.”

Jan: “I’m a 27 year old UX loving javascript developer, but actually I’m not sure what I don’t do anymore. I love every single bit of a web project, even the part where things hit the fan… I like challenges.

For better or worse I see to it that I’m a part of every stage from pitch to release. I often use the title ‘Creative Technologist’ to sum up all this fuzziness. I have no formal degree, but have been working with the web since 2003. Currently I’m employed at a Swedish company named Circuit.”

SOINK: “Why did you join SthlmStartupHack?”

Jan: “A couple of weeks ago I attended “Escape from /dev/null”, a Javascript and Python programming competition. Teams where created by chance and I was paired with two guys I’ve never met before, Linus Unnebäck and Soe Thiha. After the competition Soe suggested that we should attend another hackathon, Sthlm Startup Hack. It sounded like a really good idea since we actually won Escape from /dev/null. Linus couldn’t make it though, but we got a replacement: Tor Andersson.”

SOINK: “What did you develop and why do you think you are the winner?”

Jan: “Tor, Soe and I built a house for sale search engine where you can filter out houses in areas with a lot of noise and pollution – a mashup between Booli and Open Stockholm. When you have 90 seconds to present something and the winner is chosen by the audience its more about the presentation than the application. Our fundamental idea is awesome, the application we managed to build was good, but I think we had the most memorable presentation… and being last just before the voting doesn’t hurt. :)

SOINK: “You recently won another hack competition hosted by Spotify, what was that all about?”

Jan: “Escape from /dev/null is a programming competition that comes in different flavors. That one was a javascript and python competition where teams where randomly selected. I had the good fortune to be paired with two really awesome developers, Linus Unnebäck and Soe Thiha. There is actually another Escape from /dev/null planned for 16th of June. If you like coding and competing and want to see Stockholm at an awesome time of the year, you should really check it out. http://swdc.se/devnull/instance/stockholm-sweden-166-2012/
